Creating awareness on Adolescent Mental health and substance abuse.
”Kalumaram” Street Drama

JMFOA Australia worked in partnership with independent theatre activists – a local drama
and theatre group. Kilinochchi Medical association (KMA) and local mental health
authorities created a street drama, which was showcased at up to 35 places.
The goal of the project was to create awareness regarding drug and alcohol misuse among
the community in the Kilinochchi district.
JMFOA Australia funded Rs 2 818 450/- to cover the cost of production, and expenses
involved with running the drama at various places across the Kilinochchi district.

➢ Kilinochchi Medical association (KMA)
➢ The project was also assisted by the District secretariat of Kilinochchi.

Connecting with your roots-Cultural Preservation. Streaming Thoovanam – a Tamil movie.

Thoovanam is a Tamil movie produced in Jaffna in collaboration with Consultant Physician Dr
S Sivansuthan and Mr Rathitharan Kathiresu – a senior lecturer in Drama and theatre arts from
University of Jaffna. It’s a full length Tamil movie solely produced in Jaffna. It centres around
a message to our community locally and abroad. JMFOA assisted in streaming the movie in
Australia, namely Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. With our teams hard work in the
major cities we managed to raise $7500 in Perth, $1198 in Melbourne, $6015 from Sydney
and $1000 in Adelaide.
The total fund $ 15713 raised through this project is going to be donated to “Nithilam
“foundation in Jaffna. Nithilam is a charity organization in Jaffna which advocates for the
community and mental health services in North and East Sri Lanka.
Dr Sivansuthan and his team have achieved the goal using cinematic media to strongly
advocate their message.

Enhancing the Cardiology Service in Trincomalee Sri Lanka

JMFOA Australia is in the process of supporting the cardiology unit of Trincomalee District
General Hospital to expand their services. We have received a request from the cardiology
unit to provide external pace makers, to help victims of digitalis toxicity, as part of the
mental health crisis care treatment process.

Global Diabetes Walk

World Diabetes Day ( WDD) is the world’s largest awareness campaign. It’s marked yearly on 14th November.

Wearing blue and joining in ‘ Global Diabetes Walk’ is one of the local events for the diabetes awareness campaign.

The walk was memorable and meaningful and was held on 11th November 2023.

The Theme of the walk this year was;

Know Your Risk ; Know Your Response.”

JMFOA Australia COVID Relief Activities 2021

JMFOA Australia is always committed to supporting our community back in our motherland. COVID posed many challenges to the hospitals and our community in Sri Lanka. JMFOA Australia didn’t hesitate to open her arms to remedy their needs.

JMFOA NZ also joined us in this mission. We donated medical equipment to north and east hospitals and dry rations to families financially struggling due to unemployment and restricted movements during COVID pandemic.

Following hospitals received the medical equipment donated by JMFOA :

  • TH Batticaloa
  • TH Jaffna
  • DGH Trincomale
  • DGH Mannar
  • DGH, Thellipallai
  • DGH, Mullaitivu
  • Base hospital, Kalmunai North

Dry rations were donated to selected families from NE border villages living in extreme difficult circumstances due to COVID crisis. Each family received a ration pack worth of SL Rs 1500/-.
Families living under extreme poverty were selected from each district (Mullaitivu, Mannar,Trinocomale, Batticaloa, Amparai) with the help of local volunteer groups and were offered the above ration packs. Each selected district received SL Rs 250,000/- worth of food items. JMFOA Australia sincerely thank the local volunteer groups Amman Makallir Illa Foundation, Uthavum Karankal,Thambalakamam, Trincomale and Killinochi Education Development Trust for their support in getting this donations reaching the community in time.

JMFOA Australia sincerely thank her valuable members for their enormous support to this crisis. The COVID fund raising generated $55,000 from JMFOA Australia chapter members and the money collected was used for this project.

JMFOA NZ donated AUD8,484/- to purchase a non-invasive ventilator for TH Jaffna. JMFOA
Australia coordinated this purchase and donation.

Medical equipments – SL RS 8,310,000.00/- (AUD 54,670/-)
Dry rations – SL RS 1,250,000.00/- (AUD 8250/-)

Drug Screening Kits

As part of the fighting against drugs program, we recently provided urine multi drug screening kits worth Rs 350,000 to Teaching Hospital Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

Jaffna Medical faculty canteen assisted program

Due to the recent economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the majority of undergraduates in Sri Lanka are attending university away from their hometowns and   are faced with massive challenges. These include finding nutritious and affordable food, transport, and most importantly in carrying out their academic activities. JMFOA Australia donated Rs 1.2 million through Local Alumni to the canteens belonging to the Medical Faculty and Medical Students’ Hostel in Jaffna.

Wellbeing centre


We have already contributed the initial establishment cost worth of SL Rs 2,201,000/- ( AUD 18,641) to the VC (University of Jaffna) fund to set up the Well Being centre. The total expected budget for this project is nearly AUD 60,000. A contractual agreement was signed between Jaffna University and JMFOA Australia regarding the establishment, management and functioning of this service.

JMFOA sponsored construction of waiting room and toilet facility for OPD Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
The out-patient department of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital provides care for around 2000 patients daily. They have only one functioning toilet for these patients, and there is lack of waiting room to facilitate the smooth turnover of this large number of patients.

We have undertaken to build an outpatient waiting area with six toilets including a separate private female toilet. We have contributed of this project is around 20,000 AUD from Money collected in 2016 Gold Coast AGM

Facilitated fund raising activities members for doctors/doctors family in need both in Sri Lanka and Australia

Books and barcode reader

Donation of textbooks and a bar-code reader to Jaffna Medical Faculty Library. Upon the request by the Librarian of JMF we donated textbooks that are frequently used by the medical students. In addition, a bar-cord reader was donated for easy tracking of books. We have spent more than $2000 for this project.

We sponsored a medical student’s travel expense to participate in International Physiology Quiz which held in Malaysia. The cost was $ 500.

Mentoring Programme for Junior doctors in Australia

 As you may be aware JMFOA Australia has been engaged in several educational activities for the betterment of our faculty students and members.
We initiated a project to direct and advise the JMFOA members in Australia who are in need of professional guidance. Several senior medical practitioners are supporting this course.
Currently, many of our members are mentoring the junior practitioners on their career pathways.
We thank everyone who is facilitating this fruitful project.
